Sommer Hammoud, MD, an Orthopaedic Surgeon with the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute

Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Sommer Hammoud, who serves patients throughout the State of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Hammoud is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in sports-related injuries of the female athlete. Her clinical interests include anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions, multi-ligament knee injuries, knee meniscus tears, shoulder instability and labral tears, as well as rotator cuff repair.  

In practice with the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, she sees patients at the offices in Bensalem, Blue Bell, Center City, and Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. She also performs surgical procedures at Jefferson Surgery Center – Blue Bell & Rothman Orthopaedic Speciality Hospital.

Alongside her clinical role, Dr. Hammoud serves as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University. 

Specializing in sports related injuries of the knee, shoulder and elbow, she is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Orthopaedic Research Society, the Arthroscopy Association of North America (Fellow Member), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (Fellow Member), and the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (Fellow Member). In addition, she is affiliated with Riverview Surgery Center, Vincera Institute, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Jefferson Methodist Hospital, and Riddle Hospital.

Upon graduating with her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, Dr. Hammond went on to earn her medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She then performed her internship in general surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, her residency in orthopaedic surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery, and her fellowship in sports medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. During her fellowship, she served as an assistant team physician in the care of the Boston Red Sox, New England Revolution, and Boston Bruins as well as served as the head team physician for Curry College athletics.

Holding certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Basic Life Support, she is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Among Dr. Hammoud’s most notable achievements include Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2016, 2017, 2018), Patients’ Choice Award (2017, 2018), and On-Time Doctor Award (2017, 2018).
