Get to know Cardiologist Dr. Stanley Katz, who serves patients in Riverhead, New York.

With over five decades of experience, Dr. Katz is a seasoned cardiologist at Northwell Health Physician Partners Cardiology at Riverhead. He also serves as Senior Vice President of Cardiovascular Services & Chairman of Cardiology at Peconic Bay Medical Center, and is a Professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Helping patients maintain a healthy heart, his areas of focus include angioplasty, antihypertensive agents, heart diseases, interventional cardiology, stent device, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement. 

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Katz graduated with his medical degree from the University of Cape Town Faculty of Medicine. He then interned at Tel Hashomer Hospital in Israel and performed his residency in pathology at Boston University Hospital. He further completed his medical residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Montefiore Medical Center – Moses Division.

Thereafter, the doctor attained board certification in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

In his leadership roles, Dr. Katz began his career as a staff cardiologist at LIJ Medical Center. He also oversaw New York’s largest cardiac catheterization laboratory at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH). He joined NSUH in 1991 after serving for 10 years as director of cardiac catheterization at Winthrop University Hospital. 

Having always been at the forefront of new technological advancements in the field, Dr. Katz began performing acute infarct angioplasty in 1984, even though the procedure did not become routine until 1994. Similarly, he began performing coronary stenting with biliary stents in 1993, more than a year before the procedure was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. In 1998, he began incorporating flat panels into Northwell’s cardiac catheterization labs.

Holding fellowship status, Dr. Katz is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC).

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).

The author of more than 35 peer-reviewed publications and over 50 abstracts, Dr. Katz has also been a primary investigator on 16 clinical studies, mostly involving intervention and acute myocardial infarction.

Among his various accolades include Patients’ Choice Award (2012, 2011), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2012, 2011), Top 10 Doctor – Neighborhood (2014), and Top 10 Doctor – City (2014).
