A seasoned anesthesiologist, Dr. Byerly is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and is the Director of Obstetrical Anesthesiology at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital.

UT Southwestern Medical Center is one of the world’s top academic medical centers, offering compassionate patient care and advanced medical thinking. They treat about 80 specialties, several of which are ranked among the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report.

William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital brings together the knowledge, expertise, research, and innovation of a world-class medical institution into one remarkable facility — with the patient at the center of it all. It was designed with the care and comfort of patients and their families in mind.

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after she earned her medical degree at the University of Florida College of Medicine, where she also completed her internship and residency in anesthesiology, and received advanced training through a fellowship in neuroanesthesiology.

An authority in her field, she is board-certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). As the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, the ABA is committed to partnering with physicians to advance lifelong learning and exceptional patient care. Its mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology.

Remaining up to date in her field, Dr. Byerly is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Texas Medical Association, and the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists. She serves on several committees, including the Patient Safety Committee for the Society of Obstetrical Anesthesia and Perinatology.

Furthermore, she also represents the Dallas County Medical Society/Tarrant County Medical Society at the North Texas Alliance for Clinician Resilience, a group governed by the National Academy of Medicine that aims to increase satisfaction and well-being among health care providers.

In her professional experience, Dr. Byerly is a certified facilitator for the Institute for Integrative Health’s course, “Educating for Enhanced Self-Awareness and Self-Care: An Experiential Faculty Training Program in Mind–Body Medicine.” She has delivered numerous presentations, contributed to the book Complications in Anesthesia, and published several academic articles, including a piece on physician wellness, entitled “Female Physician Wellness: Are Our Expectations of Ourselves Extreme?”

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure, and temperature, they measure the patient’s respiration.

On a more personal note, Dr. Byerly was raised in a divorced family and experienced many forms of trauma during her childhood and teenage years. She married another physician but, after her marriage ended in divorce, she found herself as a single mom of two beautiful daughters. Between her personal life and challenging career, she suffered a major episode of burnout. After finding her way out of the burnout, she became a Certified Life Coach, and strives to help women physicians who are going through the same thing get joy back in their personal and professional lives so they don’t have to leave medicine.
