Dr. Comer is a board-certified pathologist and fellowship-trained molecular pathologist who currently serves as a Senior Director of Clinical Pathology in Illumina Laboratory Services. Founded in 1998, Illumina, Inc. is a global biotechnology leader in genomic sequencing utilized for a broad spectrum of clinical diagnostic testing and therapeutic care including infectious disease, oncology and prenatal genomic applications. The team of professionals working at Illumina, Inc. are committed to providing the highest quality of laboratory diagnostic services involved with complex genetic and genomic testing for patient care.
Prior to joining Illumina, Inc. in early 2022, Dr. Comer was affiliated with Mission Pathology Consultants, Inc. in Santa Barbara, which he joined in 2014, and served on the medical staff for Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, and Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital. He served as the Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine as well as the Laboratory Director for the three hospitals, the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and Pacific Diagnostic Laboratories, the largest clinical laboratory along the central California coastal region.
Dr. Comer earned his medical degree from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego, as well as his fellowship in molecular genetic pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He also completed a master’s degree in business management from the Peter Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University.
Dr. Comer is a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists and holds a Certificate of Qualification from the New York State Department of Health for molecular genetics and oncology testing. He is also a member of the Association for Molecular Pathology, the American Statistical Association and the Phi Betta Kappa Society.
Pathology is a medical specialty that is concerned with the diagnosis of patient disease based on a wide spectrum of diagnostic modalities including microscopic, biochemical, immunologic, and molecular analysis of human blood, biofluids and tissues.
