Get to know Urologist and Director of Reconstructive Urology Surgery Dr. Susan E. Tarry, who serves patients in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Specializing in reconstructive and robotic surgery, Dr. Tarry is a board-certified urologist who treats the entire range of urologic diseases and conditions including kidney cancer, prostate and bladder cancer, pelvic floor prolapse, recurrent urinary tract infections, interstitial cystitis, overactive bladder, urethral stricture disease, and kidney stones. She is affiliated with Urologic Consultants of Southeastern Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Several years ago, three medium-sized neighborhood urology practices merged and became Urologic Consultants of Southeastern Pennsylvania. The goal of these like-minded physicians and friends who created the practice was to continue to control and improve the quality of patient care while meeting the new challenges and opportunities in healthcare.

Prior to joining Urologic Consultants of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Dr. Tarry practiced and taught within the Division of Urology at the University of Texas, where she was given the Outstanding Teacher Award in 2016. She is now the Director of Reconstructive Urology Surgery at the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia.

Throughout her academic career, Dr. Tarry earned her bachelor’s degree in biology, as well as her medical degree from West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. She then went on to complete her internship in general surgery and her residency in urology at West Virginia University Hospital. She also completed her fellowship in reconstructive urology at the Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, Texas under the tutelage of Dr. Charles Secrest.

A Fellow of American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, she is board-certified in urology by the American Board of Urology (ABU). The ABU is organized to encourage study, improve standards, and promote competency in the practice of urology. The mission of the ABU is to act for the benefit of the public by establishing and maintaining standards of certification for urologists, as well as by working with certified urologists to achieve lifelong learning to insure the delivery of high quality, safe, and ethical urologic care.

Dr. Tarry is focused on the three pillars of an effective urology practice: treating patients, conducting medical training of physicians, and conducting medical research. She has received awards and grants in each of these areas in addition to an award for her volunteer medical service in Uganda. She is also a member of the American Urological Association.

Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. Urologists, like Dr. Tarry, specialize in diseases of the urinary tract and the male reproductive system. Patients may be referred to a urologist if their physician suspects they may need treatment for a condition relating to the bladder, urethra, ureters, kidneys, and adrenal glands.

Some of the procedures that Dr. Tarry performs include urethroplasty, urinary diversion, vaginal reconstruction, artificial urinary sphincter, bladder augmentation, fistula repair, penile prosthesis, and sling procedures for incontinence. She has a strong commitment to patient care. “Nothing makes me happier than to see a patient doing well after surgery,” as stated by the doctor.
