Get to know Reproductive Endocrinologist Dr. Susan L. Treiser, who serves the population of New Jersey.
Dr. Treiser is a board-certified Reproductive Endocrinologist, Obstetrician and Gynecologist who served as co-founder and Laboratory Director of IVF New Jersey for the past 25 years, before joining Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey’s (RMANJ) team of accomplished physicians.
She learned from her parents early on the importance of education. Both Holocaust survivors, after enduring the concentration camps in Czechoslovakia her parents moved to Montreal, Quebec Canada where they raised their family. “My parent’s emphasized education is something that could not be taken from you,” she shares. “They taught me that with hard work and perseverance I could accomplish anything I set my heart on.”
In regards to her education, Dr. Treiser received her Bachelor of Science from McGill University where she majored in Genetics. She then went on to attend Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. where she earned a PhD in pharmacology and a degree in medicine. “I entered Georgetown as a PhD student in Pharmacology” she says, “but soon realized I missed working with patients and the daily reward it brings.” She was then accepted into a combined MD/PhD program at the University where she began her clinical rotations in OB/GYN. “Obstetrics and Gynecology was by far my favorite rotation,” she says. “I loved being a part of the happiest moment in a family’s life- the birth of their babies.”
Dr. Treiser performed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. “My two most wonderful accomplishments during medical/graduate school was the birth of my two sons,” she reminisces. “The joy I felt being a mother and helping other women accomplish that goal became my passion.”
In 1990, Dr. Treiser co-founded IVF New Jersey with her colleague Dr. Michael Darder. Her caring, competent approach to reproductive medicine along with Dr. Darder’s experience as Medical Director for the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) program at Columbia University quickly established IVF New Jersey as an advance New Jersey-based fertility practice.
Under her leadership as Laboratory Director, Dr. Treiser and the IVF New Jersey embryology team received “Accreditation with Distinction” status consecutively. She was recognized in 2008 as a “Top Doctor” in New York Magazine and is the co-recipient of the 2000 Zenith Award from RESOLVE’s New Jersey chapter. Dr. Treiser is the author of “A Woman Doctor’s Guide to Infertility”, published author in Science Magazine, and is an invited speaker at the annual International Seminar of Reproductive Ethics Symposium.
Her areas of specialty include improving infertility diagnosis and treatment, particularly in the areas of third party reproduction, gestational surrogacy, egg donation, and reproductive ethics. In 2005, Dr. Treiser established the egg freezing program at IVF New Jersey where she helped young women preserver their fertility to ensure they could have a family when the time is right for them.
In her free time, Dr. Treiser enjoys spending time with her two young granddaughters. “Having these two young joys in my life,” she says, “reminds me of how wonderful it is to have children and what a privilege it is for me to be a part of a profession that is so intimately involved in creating families.” She also loves visiting Colorado with her family, skiing, golfing, hiking and spending time outdoors.
