Get to know Adult Nurse Practitioner Svetlana T. Jelen, who serves patients in New York City, New York.

Svetlana is currently serving patients at the NYU Student Health Center, located in New York City, New York. Some of the services that the Center offers include medical services and counseling services. Nationally recognized, receiving numerous awards and accolades and with over 225 full-time college health specialists, the Student Health Center offers a comprehensive set of medical, psychological, health promotion, disability, and ancillary services to address the full spectrum of students’ health and wellness needs.

Svetlana specializes in several areas in the field of nursing, including travel medicine, primary care, as well as allergy and immunology. Her primary focus is Travel Medicine or Emporiatrics. Travel Medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention and management of health problems of international travelers. Primary care is the day-to-day healthcare given by a health care provider; whereas allergy and immunology involves the management of disorders related to the immune system.

Svetlana attributes her success to Kathy Gunkel, DNP, APN, who was the Director of Nursing at the NYU SHC; coordinating nursing services for 40,000 students. Kathy Gunkel currently serves as Director of the Rutgers Community Health Center @ FOCUS and is also a clinical assistant professor at the Rutgers University School of Nursing. Svetlana acknowledges Ms. Gunkel for providing her with extensive guidance and for sharing her own knowledge.

Svetlana started out as a medical technologist, receiving her Associate’s degree in Medical Technology from the New York City College of Technology. While working in the healthcare field, she was encouraged to further pursue her education and join the field of nursing. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Hunter College, and her Master of Science Degree in Adult Primary Care in Nursing (MSN-ANP) from New York University.

Svetlana holds professional memberships with several organizations, including the International Society of Travel Medicine, ANA, the Golden Key Honor Society, and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

Svetlana has been honored with the Dr. J Brogan Memorial Award for Highest Academic Achievement in Anatomy and Physiology. She has also received an Award for Outstanding Community Service.

In addition to English, Svetlana speaks Russian and Ukrainian.

In her spare time, Svetlana enjoys reading and traveling internationally, including trips to Israel and China.
