Born in New York City, Dr. Stern attended City University, where he was part of Phi Beta Kappa and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree where he graduated cum laude with honors in biology. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the New York University School of Dentistry in 1977. He served as a dentist in the U.S. Navy in the Philadelphia Regional Dental Center from 1977 until 1979, before relocating to Michigan with his wife in 1981.
In January of 1995, he received a United States Patent for a method to fabricate dental crowns. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth in order to restore its shape, size, and strength, as well as to improve its appearance.

In his spare time, Dr. Stern enjoys sailing, listening to music, traveling to see natural and man-made wonders, as well as spending time with his family.
