Get to know Registered Nurse Sylvia Reimer, who served patients in Houston, Texas.

Sylvia is a registered nurse who is retired from practice. During her 23 years of active service as a nurse, Sylvia was affiliated with Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, Texas. Memorial Hermann Health System is the largest not-for-profit health system in southeast Texas and consists of 16 hospitals, 8 Cancer Centers, 3 Heart & Vascular Institutes, and 27 sports medicine and rehabilitation centers, in addition to other outpatient and rehabilitation centers. It was formed in the late 1990s when the Memorial and Hermann systems joined. 

In her field, Sylvia practiced as an emergency room nurse. ER nurses treat patients coming through hospital emergency departments for a variety of reasons including trauma, injury, and acute-onset symptoms. They treat patients of all ages and backgrounds.

Sylvia also served as a paramedic nurse. Becoming a paramedic nurse, or flight nurse, requires an associate or bachelor’s degree, work experience, EMT certification, the completion of an RN-to-Paramedic bridge program, as well as earning a paramedic license and maintaining certification every two years .Actually I completed my Paramedic in 1987 and went back to school in 1990 to complete my Nursing. Even though i was licensed to do both i never worked on an air ambulance. Also when i added nursing there was no bridge class so I had to start from nursing 101. I do have a specific degree in Science of Emergency Medicine. 

When Sylvia was a young girl, her favorite game to play outside was nursing those who wrecked their bicycles. God inspired Sylvia to become a nurse and she felt it was her service. She was successful at everything she did and she had a great opportunity to work as a missionary nurse in many ports of call. In the last several years, she got to travel and work with her husband, who was also a paramedic. 

Sylvia has been to Honduras, Africa, Brazil, Nicaraqua and Vietnam, bringing her empathy, care, and compassion to patients. She has also helped to educate student nurses and residents, insisting that patient safety is first and foremost.

In 1994 also earned an Associate’s Degree in Emergency Medicine from Lone Star college In 1996, Sylvia earned her Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Lone Star College. Sylvia is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. She is also a certified Trauma Nursing Core Course Instructor. Additionally, Sylvia is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, a member of the Emergency Nurses Association, actively serving the last 10 years on the board of directors.  . Now in retirement, Sylvia enjoys gardening. 

A registered nurse (RN) is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. RNs fulfill a variety of job duties. In addition to the primary role in treating and caring for the acutely ill and injured patients ranging in all age groups, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other RN job functions include life saving interventions, performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, and assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up.
