Get to know Hospice & Palliative Nurse, Tamela R. Hunacek, who serves patients in the State of Michigan.
Attributing her success as a hospice & palliative nurse to her background in leadership and team building, Tamela is now looking for a new opportunity to serve the hospice and palliative population.
Up until recently, she served patients at Beaumont Health – a not-for-profit health organization in southeast Michigan. Beaumont Health is Michigan’s largest health care system (based on inpatient admissions and net patient revenue) and provides patients with compassionate and extraordinary care, no matter where they live. With eight hospitals, 145 outpatient locations, nearly 5,000 physicians, and more than 38,000 employees, Beaumont’s commitment to patient and family-centered care contributes to the health and well-being of residents throughout the community and beyond.
After earning her Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) from Henry Ford College in Dearborn, Michigan in 2012, Tamela went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from Chamberlain University in Downers Grove, Illinois in 2017. She also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In addition to being certified in Basic Life Support (BLS – not intended for postnominal use), she remains a member of several professional organizations, including the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association.
Hospice and palliative medicine is a formal subspecialty of medicine in the United States that focuses on symptom management, relief of suffering, and end-of-life care. Both palliative care and hospice care provide comfort. However, palliative care can begin at diagnosis and at the same time as treatment. Hospice care begins after treatment of the disease is stopped and when it is clear that the person is not going to survive the illness.
