Tami Hendriksz, DO: A Champion for Pediatric Education and Community Health at Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine

Innovative Teaching Approaches Bridge Classroom Learning with Real-World Pediatric Care

Vallejo, California – Tami Hendriksz, DO, a dedicated educator and pediatrician, serves as a Professor of Pediatrics, and Dean and Chief Academic Officer at Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine (TUCOM). With a commitment to enhancing medical education through real-world experiences, Dr. Hendriksz incorporates her weekly community clinic work into her teaching, providing a unique perspective that benefits her students and patients alike.

“I started an innovative curricular series that brings patients in to share their experiences—both positive and negative—interacting with physicians,” said Dr. Hendriksz. “This approach not only helps my students learn how to engage effectively with their future patients, but it also makes the material more memorable. When patients describe their medical concerns, the topics become more relatable and ‘sticky’ for my students, as they can connect the information to a real person rather than just abstract PowerPoint slides.”

Dr. Hendriksz earned her Undergraduate Degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, before obtaining her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree from TUCOM. She completed her pediatric internship and residency at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and returned to TUCOM in 2009 to contribute to the education of future physicians while serving the local underserved pediatric population.

Over the years, Dr. Hendriksz has held several leadership roles at TUCOM, including Vice Chair of the Primary Care Department, Assistant Dean of Clinical Integration, Associate Dean of Clinical Education, and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. Her board certification by the American Board of Pediatrics, along with her active membership in numerous professional organizations, including the Osteopathic Physicians & Surgeons of California, the American Osteopathic Association, the Gold Humanism Honor Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics (Fellow), and the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians (Fellow), underscores her commitment to excellence in pediatric care and medical education.

A five-time recipient of the TUCOM Teacher of the Year Award, Dr. Hendriksz attributes her success to her personal experiences in healthcare and the mentorship she has received throughout her career. She is passionate about osteopathy, medical education, pediatrics, humanism in medicine, and promoting wellness among physicians and trainees.

On a personal note, Dr. Hendriksz started dating her husband during her first year of medical school, and together they are proud parents of two daughters. Her dedication to family and community mirrors her professional commitment to shaping the next generation of compassionate healthcare providers.
