Leading the Way in Empowering Asian Americans to Prioritize Mental Health and Well-Being
Dr. Hsu is a dedicated advocate and champion for the mental health of Asian Americans, with a particular focus on providing education, research, and services through her organization, SPEAK (a Supportive Place for Empowering Asian Americans and Kin). Her clinical expertise lies in evidence-based psychotherapy for children, adolescents, and families grappling with various challenges such as anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, behavioral issues, adjustment difficulties, and parent-child relationship problems.
Education-wise, she attended Northwestern University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, followed by her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Clinical Psychology from George Washington University in 2011. She further honed her skills through an internship in Psychology at Kings County Hospital Center and a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at New York University.
As a second-generation Taiwanese/Chinese-American and with a dual appointment as an Assistant Professor of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Department of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Hsu brings nearly two decades of clinical experience, seven years of leadership experience, and nine years of expertise in program development, evaluation, and implementation. Notably, her role as the former Assistant Director of the Pediatric Behavioral Health Integration Program at Montefiore Medical Center contributed to establishing one of the nation’s largest pediatric integrated behavioral health primary care programs.
Throughout her career, her impactful work has garnered attention from prestigious media outlets such as The New York Times, WHYY PBS & NPR, VeryWell Family, Romper, Modern Healthcare, and City Limits. She is an active member of professional societies including the American Psychological Association and the Asian American Psychological Association, the latter for which she is a co-chair of the 2024 National Convention.
With a keen research focus on collaborative care in primary care settings, a systemic understanding of child and adolescent mental health, prevention, and population health, Dr. Hsu’s work has been widely recognized and published in esteemed journals. When asked about her success, she attributes it to her background as a child of immigrants, instilling in her a strong work ethic, a deep desire to assist Asians and Asian American youth and families, and an unwavering passion for her work.
