Recognized as a 2020 Top Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr. Hodge Jr. is the Medical Director of Washington Health Institute in Washington, D.C. 

The Washington Health Institute was founded with the mission to improve the health of the community by providing exceptional primary and infectious diseases specialty care services. The providers approach the unique needs of each patient by providing holistic care support and patient education, while participating in innovative research that advances the quality of life for their patients.

Committed to excellent medical care, Dr. Hodge Jr.’s philosophy in regards to patient care involves partnering with the patient to enhance/maintain quality of life as it relates to the patient’s overall health. He believes active participation of both doctor and patient in that relationship gives the best chance of achieving that goal.

Born in Washington, D.C., his parents raised him in nearby Prince George’s County, Maryland. He attended college and medical school at the University of Virginia. Following a residency in internal medicine at Washington DC VA Medical Center in 1990, he completed a fellowship in infectious disease at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital / Washington DC VA Medical Center in 1995.

Upon completing his training, Dr. Hodge Jr. entered private practice where he focuses on the care of the HIV infected. He is board-certified in infectious disease and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, which is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Among his professional affiliations, he is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Academy of HIV Medicine, and the American College of Physicians. 

Certified as an HIV Specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine, Dr. Hodge serves as the HIV Consultant for the Community of Hope (Marie Reed Health Center location). He attends multiple medical meetings a year to keep abreast of the constant changes in medical management, and is actively involved in multiple speaker bureaus dedicated to educating healthcare providers in the management of the HIV infected. 

Published within the Journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases, Dr. Hodge Jr. has presented his work at national meetings. He has served as a sub-investigator on numerous clinical trials on HIV infection in a private ambulatory setting, and has served as a principal investigator on the Discovery Trial (Gilead Sciences).

Infectious disease is a medical specialty dealing with prevention, the diagnosis, and treatment of infections. An infectious disease specialist’s practice also consists of managing nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections.

Actively involved in a variety of community endeavors to increase HIV awareness, Dr. Hodge Jr. has offered his services in public clinic settings to care for underinsured / uninsured HIV infected patients. He is especially known for his work to promote awareness of HIV in the African American Gay community. 

Among his numerous accolades, he is the recipient of Patients’ Choice Award (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015), On-Time Doctor Award (2009, 2014, 2015, 2016), Patients’ Choice 5th Anniversary Award (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016), Compassionate Doctor Award – 5 Year Honoree (2013, 2014, 2015), Top 10 Doctor – Neighborhood (2014), Top 10 Doctor – City (2014), and Top 10 Doctor – State (2014).
