Lubbock, Texas — Thomas E. Hutson, DO, PharmD, PhD, FACP, has earned international recognition as a leading expert in urologic cancers. He currently serves as the Division Chief of Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, where he is also a Professor. In addition, Dr. Hutson has taken on the role of Medical Director for the upcoming UMC Cancer Center, set to open its doors in 2026, with a mission to provide comprehensive cancer care to patients in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.
Dr. Hutson brings over 20 years of distinguished experience in cancer research and treatment to his new position. His prior leadership roles at Baylor University Medical Center and esteemed research organizations, including the Sarah Cannon Research Institute, have positioned him as a thought leader within the oncology community. At the Sarah Cannon Research Institute, he co-led the Phase 1b/2 clinical trial program and served on the GU Research Executive Committee, contributing valuable insights that have advanced the field of urologic cancer therapies.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1993 and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997 from Ohio Northern University and the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, respectively. In 2002, he completed his Doctor of Pharmacy, and his extensive training includes a residency in internal medicine and fellowships in medical oncology and experimental therapeutics at the Cleveland Clinic.
A lifelong learner, Dr. Hutson has completed several advanced degrees, including a Master of Biblical and Theological Studies with highest honors from Dallas Theological Seminary in 2018, a Master of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2021, a Master of Science in Healthcare Leadership from Brown University in 2022, a Master of Jurisprudence in Healthcare Law from Texas A&M University School of Law in 2023, a Master of Public Health from Yale School of Public Health in 2024, a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy from Liberty University in 2024, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Religion/Religious Studies and Government/Public Policy from Selinus University of Sciences and Literature in 2024. His diverse educational background enhances his research interests, which include drug development for urologic cancers, the integration of faith in healthcare, and improving patient outcomes through spirituality.
Dr. Hutson is board-certified in medical oncology and internal medicine, and he holds Diplomate status from the American Board of Internal Medicine and the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons. His professional affiliations include memberships in the American Osteopathic Association, the Christian Medical & Dental Associations, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the European Society of Medical Oncology, the Society of Urologic Oncology, the American Medical Association, and the American Society of Hematology. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hutson has authored over 500 scholarly works, including original research articles, abstracts, and contributions to top-tier scientific journals like the New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet. He is a sought-after speaker at international medical conferences and has served as the clinical lead investigator on several prominent research trials. As Editor in Chief of the Kidney Cancer Journal and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for KCCure, his influence extends well beyond the clinic.
On a personal note, Dr. Hutson resides on a ranch in Knox City with his wife and two sons. He balances his professional commitments with family life, embodying his belief that strong family ties are essential, especially during challenging times like a cancer diagnosis.
