A fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Costales specializes in hip and knee reconstructive surgery. He possesses extensive experience in various procedures, including minimally invasive total hip and knee arthroplasty, total joint replacement, direct anterior total hip arthroplasty, unicompartmental arthroplasty, robotic total knee and total hip arthroplasty, and revision total joint replacement.
Dedicated to providing comprehensive care for patients aged 18 and above, Dr. Costales holds affiliations with numerous healthcare institutions in Pennsylvania. These include the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, specifically the Penn Musculoskeletal Center – University City on the 8th floor, Pennsylvania Hospital (Penn Orthopaedics Pennsylvania Hospital – Cathcart Building), the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Orthopaedics Woodbury Heights and the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, He also holds the esteemed role of Director of the Joint Replacement Program at both the Philadelphia and Wilmington Veterans Affairs Medical Centers.
Academically, Dr. Costales received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry with Honors from Georgetown University. He then went on to graduate Cum Laude with his Medical Degree from University of Maryland School of Medicine and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Society.
Furthering his education, Dr. Costales underwent his orthopedic surgery residency training at the University of Maryland Medical System / R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center where he served as a Chief Resident. At that time, he also served as a resident board member of the Maryland Orthopaedic Association. He then completed a fellowship in adult hip and knee reconstruction and joint replacement at Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School and served as the Chief Administrative Fellow.
Playing a pivotal role in medical education, Dr. Costales is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he imparts knowledge and guidance to medical students, orthopaedic surgery residents and fellows. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Costales is actively engaged in academic research and is a candidate member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS).
