Tracee Short, MD, a Burn Surgeon with Baton Rouge General Surgical Associates
Get to know Burn Surgeon Dr. Tracee Short, who serves patients in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
As one of the nation’s most notable burn surgeons, Dr. Short is a board-certified general surgeon who is fellowship trained in adult and pediatric burns. She is in practice with Baton Rouge General Surgical Associates, located within Baton Rouge General where she is the Medical Director of the Burn Unit.
For the past decade, she has worked closely with patients and their families during very stressful times. She has cared for over a thousand patients and they often comment “she treats me like family.” She is able to explain difficult topics in plain English, which is what developed Dr. Short into America’s Burn Surgeon.
A standout in the burn community, her passion for treating and supporting thousands of burn injury survivors is evident in her empowering personal journey and commitment to healing others during difficult times.
At the start of her academic career, Dr. Short earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and completed her surgical internship and residency at UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She completed her fellowship in cosmetic surgery at English Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery in Little Rock, Arkansas, and completed her fellowship in burn surgery at the University of North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill.
Specializing in reconstructive burn surgery and general surgery, she is board-certified through the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
Striving to remain at the forefront to skincare and burn technology through research and innovation, Dr. Short is a member of the American Burn Association and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.
The goals of reconstructive burn surgery are to improve both the function and the cosmetic appearance of burn scars. This involves altering scar tissue, with both nonoperative and operative treatment. A burn surgeon examines, diagnoses, and surgically treats patients with burns from heat, cold, chemical, or electrical incidents. He or she performs escharotomy, skin grafting, and secondary burn surgery, and reviews patient history and confirms need for surgery.
An engaging and impactful speaker, Dr. Short delivers enlightening insight, powerful testimony, and leading education inspired by her own story of enduring multiple personal setbacks. “You woke up this morning never imagining what was to come. But you and your family will get through this and I will help.” Persevering even with the unexpected is a crede she lives and instills in her patients.
A nationally recognized consultant, author, and philanthropist, she is the Executive Director of the McMillion Education Foundation, a scholarship foundation designed to help bridge the gap to educational success. She coordinates and participates in burn outreach through camps, carnivals, and conferences.
In the continued spirit of wanting to do more she developed a largely organic, all natural product designed to moisturize while helping to alleviate dry, itchy skin – Dr. Shortee’s Burn Butter and Total Body Butter.
