Tracye Lawyer, MD, PhD, an Orthopedic Surgeon with St. Luke’s Clinic – Orthopedics

Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Tracye Lawyer, who serves patients throughout the State of Idaho.

Dr. Lawyer is board-certified and fellowship-trained in orthopedic sports medicine and serves as the Medical Director for St. Luke’s cartilage preservation and restoration program, seeing patients in Nampa and Meridian, Idaho. She specializes in arthroscopic and open surgery of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. 

The doctor’s special interests include pediatric and adult cartilage repair and restoration of the knee, shoulder and elbow, ACL reconstruction, meniscus repairs, meniscal allograft transplantation, multi-ligament knee reconstruction, patellar instability, total and reverse shoulder arthroplasty, rotator cuff repair, biceps tendon repairs, shoulder instability surgery and ligament reconstruction of the elbow.

Back in the early days of her academic career, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Stanford University, where she was a two-sport athlete. She earned PAC-10 Player of the Year in soccer and was an NCAA track champion in the heptathlon. After college, she competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials in track and field, gaining valuable experience among the best athletes in the world. She later received the honor of induction into the Stanford Hall of Fame.

Subsequently, Dr. Lawyer received her medical degree from The Ohio State University, and completed her residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. In addition to her medical degree, she also earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) focusing on cartilage regeneration. She completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Pittsburgh where she worked with leaders and innovators in sports medicine, Dr. Freddie Fu and Dr. James Bradley. During her fellowship, she worked with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins.

As a testament of her continued education, she is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

In addition to seeing patients at St. Luke’s Clinic – Orthopedics, Dr. Lawyer is the team physician for the Rocky Mountain High School Grizzlies and Boise Hawks. She has authored multiple peer reviewed research articles and has presented her work at national meetings.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
