Dr. Fowler earned her Medical Degree from Duke University School of Medicine during which time she was awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship grant. Following medical school, she completed her residency in the Department of Family Medicine at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC, where her love of the care of the entire family grew.  After residency, she completed a fellowship in obstetrics at Moses Cone Health System further enhancing her expertise in women’s health and newborn care and preparing her better to serve her home community. She then founded Mount Jefferson Family Medicine in her hometown of Jefferson, NC in 1999, where she provided full spectrum care including outpatient and inpatient medicine, obstetrics, and nursing home care for 14 years.

Dr. Fowler now brings over two decades of experience in family medicine to WakeMed.  Dr. Fowler is dedicated to building strong, trusting relationships with her patients. She considers her role to be the  “quarterback” of her patient’s healthcare team coordinating care with other providers to ensure her patient’s needs are met as efficiently and effectively as possible.  Her efforts were recognized by her local community when Dr. Fowler was awarded the Silver Medal in the 2023  Raleigh’s Best Doctor competition in The News and Observer.

Dr. Fowler has a passion for teaching and has served as a clinical preceptor for the UNC School of Medicine as well as Duke University School of Medicine.  Currently she assists with recruiting community preceptors to the UNC School of Medicine Raleigh Campus where also she teaches medical students in her clinic. One of her proudest achievements was being awarded with the Community Teaching Award by the UNC School of Medicine in 2022.

She is the Chair of the North Carolina Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control (since 2023) and was designated a Clinical Champion for the Southeastern US by the American Cancer Society (since 2023).   She advocates for equity in health care within her organization where she serves on the WakeMed Diversity and Inclusion Council (since 2023) and has been a Delegate for NCAFP LGBTQ+ constituency at the AAFP National Conference of Constituency Leaders (2022, 2024). She loves ACC basketball and football and is an avid Carolina Tarheel fan. Her favorite destinations include the Florida Keys, Hawaii, and the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Her love for knowledge is reflected in her long standing subscription to the New England Journal of Medicine as well as the array of books on health and wellness which occupy her nightstand.
