Dr. Payne completed her undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond in 1983. Furthering her education she attended and graduated from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with her Master’s Degree. She then attended Wake Forest University School of Medicine and graduated with his Medical Degree in 1999, giving her over two decades of experience in her field.

After obtaining her medical degree, she completed her Psychiatry residency at Duke University School of Medicine, where she was chief resident. Furthering her training she completed her Clinical Psychopharmacology Fellowship.

Dr. Payne is certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. (ABPN) is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the public interest and the professions of psychiatry and neurology by promoting excellence in practice through certification and maintenance of certification processes.

To stay up to date in her field, she remains a professional member of the North Carolina Psychiatric Association and the American Psychiatric Association. The American Psychiatric Association is an organization of psychiatrists working together to ensure humane care and effective treatment for all persons with mental illness, including substance use disorders. It is the voice and conscience of modern psychiatry. Its vision is a society that has available, accessible quality psychiatric diagnosis and treatment.
