Vijay Chawla, MD, FAAP, Pediatrician

Dr. Chawla retired from Mayo Clinic Health System Albert Lea Austin, Minnesota after serving the community for 20 years.

Dr. Chawla is a Board Certified pediatrician practicing as Locum Tenens in states of Minnesota and Iowa she provides both inpatient and out patient services. Pediatricians specializes in health care of children, diagnose and treat newborn, infants, children, teenagers and young adults up to age 21. She oversees and manages physical, mental and emotional health of her patients. She specializes in childhood immunizations, RSV Prophylaxis in high risk infants, asthma, ADHD, childhood disease prevention and health promotion, quality improvement, as well as healthcare equity and equality.

She served as Assistant professor of pediatrics at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine mentoring resident physicians from Pediatrics and Family practice residency program. Also teaching students from Physician Assistant Program at Mayo Health System, and the Nurse Practitioner’s Master’s Degree Course at Winona State University.

A native of India, Dr. Chawla graduated with her diploma in Pre-Medicine from the Raj Rishi College in 1959, and received her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from the Sardar Patel Medical College, University of Rajasthan, Bikaner, India in 1964. She then went on to complete her combined internship at Prince Bijay Singh Memorial Hospital, followed by her residency in psychiatry at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India in 1965, and her residency in pediatrics at the Rohtak Medical College in 1966. She was awarded the Heinz Fellowship of British Pediatrics Association, one of the 3 candidates selected from commonwealth countries.

Subsequently, she returned to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India and received her Doctor of Medicine degree in Pediatrics in 1969. After relocating to the United States, she completed an additional residency in pediatrics and a Clinical Fellow in Emergency Pediatrics and Trauma at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine from 1993 to 1994 and 1994 to 1995, respectively. She also completed the Heinz Fellowship of the British Pediatric Association, spending time at three institutes in the United Kingdom, including Jessops Hospital for Women and Children, Hammersmith Hospital, and University Teaching Hospital London.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP), Dr. Chawla is an active member of the American Medical Association, the Minnesota American Academy of Pediatrics (Board Member), the Minnesota American Academy of Pediatrics, Immunization Workgroup (Co-Chair), the Minnesota American Academy of Pediatrics, Obesity Workgroup, the Minnesota American Academy of Pediatrics, Antiracism and Disparity Workgroup, the Mower County Health and Human Services (Medical Consultant), the Minnesota Department of Health Community Measure Pediatric Preventive Care Workgroup, the Mower County Community Health Advisory Board (Chair), the Mower County Family Planning Community Clinic (Volunteer Pediatrician), the Rochester Alternative Learning Center (Volunteer Physician), and the Southeast Minnesota Immunization Connection. As a testament to her success, Dr. Chawla is board-certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

She has also served as a member on Ask Mayo expert knowledge board and is published in national and international peer reviewed journals. She has also held various curriculums and course developments on immunization, and has given many motivational interviews. She has Bronze and Silver level certification from Mayo Clinic Quality Academy.

Among her prior professional and community affiliations, she served as a member of the British Pediatrics Association, the Iowa Medical Society, the Marian Health Center Department of Pediatrics (Chair), the Marian Health Center Executive Committee, the Northwest Pediatric Society, St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center, the Freeborn County Health and Human Services (Medical Consultant), the Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin Infection Prevention and Control Committee (Committee Chair), the Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin Maternal and Child Health Committee, and the Southeast Minnesota Immunization Connection (Chair-Elect, Chair, Past Chair).

Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Chawla has held various positions, including Staff Pediatrician at Livingston General Hospital, Livingston, Zambia, Africa (1975), Staff Pediatrician within the Department of Pediatrics Child Health at University Teaching Hospital, Lusaka, Zambia, Africa (1978 – 1981), Consultant within the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health at Harare Central Hospital, Zimbabwe, Africa (1981 – 1991), Associate Consultant/Clinical Fellow within the Division of Pediatric and Adolescent Emergency Medicine, Department of Emergency Medicine at Mayo Clinic, Rochester (1994 – 1995), Attending Pediatrician at Marian Health Center, Sioux City, Iowa (1995 – 1998), Attending Pediatrician at St. Luke’s General Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa (1995 – 1998), and Director of the School Located Influenza Immunization Program, Austin, Minnesota (2015 – 12/2017).

In the past, the doctor has served as a Pediatrics’ Instructor at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, and has held teaching positions at the Marian Health Center, Sioux City, Iowa, Ministry of Health and University of Zimbabwe. 

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends individuals be under pediatric care up to the age of 21. Pediatricians provide medical care to people ranging in age from newborns to young adults. They are trained to examine, diagnose, and treat children with a wide variety of injuries and illnesses through all of their developmental stages, as they grow and mature.
