Gilchrest Professor of Dermatology, Vice-Chair for Research, Professor of Biochemistry, and Program Director for the Dermatology Residency Program at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM).

Academically, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from the College of the Holy Cross in 1973, and graduated with his medical degree from the Harvard Medical School in 1977. He then went on to complete his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1980, followed by a residency in dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1982, where he was Chief Resident. Later, he completed his fellowship in dermatopathology at the Roger Williams Medical Center in 2006.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), the doctor is board-certified in dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology, which is a voluntary, non-profit, private, autonomous organization formed for the primary purpose of protecting the public interest by establishing and maintaining high standards of training, education, and qualifications of physicians rendering care in dermatology.

Moreover, he is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Throughout his career, Dr. Falanga has held professorships at Roger Williams Medical Center, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami, in addition to his appointments at BUSM. He also served as the Assistant Chief of Dermatology at the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center, as well as being Vice President and President of the University Medical Group at Roger Williams Medical Center.

A keen researcher, he began his research career by focusing on basic science. Later, he became interested in the application of recombinant growth factors in chronic non-healing human wounds, and was the lead author for the FDA-approved use of living bioengineered skin in non-healing wounds. More recently, his internationally recognized research program involves the development of novel stem cell therapies for applications to wound healing and tissue repair.
