Vivian V. McGee, BSN, RN, GMHS Registered Nurse with Frontier Behavioral Health

Get to know Registered Nurse Vivian V. McGee, who serves patients in Spokane, Washington.

Vivian is a registered nurse (RN). She is currently the Director of Nursing Services at Frontier Behavioral Health, where she is responsible for the oversight of all three inpatient facilities and outpatient nursing services, as well as the Infection Control Officer for the agency. Located in Spokane, Washington, Frontier Behavioral Health is a nonprofit Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) organization that provides clinically and culturally appropriate behavioral healthcare and related services to individuals of all ages in collaboration with community partners.

In 1985, Vivian earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree through ICNE (now ICN). It is where she became fascinated with mental health, including mental health disorders / emotional and behavioral disorders. Vivian after being exposed to Psychiatric Nursing she feels she was “called to serve” those with mental and behavioral health challenges.

Vivian worked at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center (PSHMC) for 27 years, mostly in the Adult/Geriatric Psychiatry Department. She absolutely loved being a part of and working with the inpatient side of care, while guiding her staff to best practices. Vivian also worked as a Clinical Educator, assisting staff in their development, as well as training new staff in the Department of Psychiatry for a period of two years. She also provided consultation to the medical floors at PSHMC for patients with psychiatric disorders during her 2 years as the Clinical Educator. Four out of the 27 years at PSHMC, Vivian co-developed a Partial Hospitalization Program for the Geriatric adult experiencing chronic Depression/ Anxiety/ Bipolar disorders, The program named OPTIONS was successful in teaching skills and providing tools for those clients and thus improving quality of life. The program significantly decreased hospitalizations and in many cases clients had zero hospitalizations after graduating the program.  Furthermore, she worked as a weekend night RN Supervisor for one year at North Central Care Center while working part-time at PSHMC. Vivian also found time to be contracted to teach Adult Family Home Administrators continuing education classes thru Spokane Falls Community College for 2 years. She also served on various committees at PSHMC and served as the interim Nurse Manager for Adult/Gero Psych Dept.

A registered nurse (RN) is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. RNs fulfill a variety of job duties. In addition to the primary role in treating and caring for patients, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other RN job functions include performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, and assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up.

Vivian has worked with abused women and their children both locally and internationally. She is very involved in her church activities and loves being a servant leader in any capacity where healing can be encouraged.

After 32 precious years of marriage, Vivian is now a widow. She has two wonderful children, Nathan and Natalie. Being an outdoor enthusiast she and her husband fished, hiked, biked and camped all of their years together. Vivian loves to travel for pleasure and to go on mission trips where she not only helps others, but becomes enriched beyond words in her spiritual walk. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, gardening, spending time with  friends and attending church where she loves to volunteer her time.
