After earning her medical degree from the University of Pernambuco in Brazil in 1992, Dr. Bunin went on to complete her residency in rheumatology and a post-graduate program, earning her Doctorate degree at the prestigious University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, and in collaboration with Necker Hospital in Paris, France under the tutoring of Dr. Renato Monteiro. This was followed by fellowship training in immunology and rheumatology at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and at the University of Washington in Seattle.
When her husband became an anchor at ESPN, she moved to Connecticut and completed her residency at Baystate Medical Center – Tufts University School of Medicine. Thereafter, she completed an additional fellowship in rheumatology at Yale University, after which she became board-certified in both internal medicine and rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Bunin is a member of the American College of Rheumatology, where she has presented multiple posters and abstracts. She has also been published numerous times in various medical journals and teaches medical students, residents, and fellows.
Rheumatology is a branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and therapy of rheumatic diseases. Physicians who have undergone formal training in rheumatology are called rheumatologists. Rheumatologists treat arthritis, autoimmune diseases, pain disorders affecting joints, and osteoporosis.
