Pfeifer’s Dedication and Expertise Transforming Children’s Eye Care

A distinguished member of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Iowa since 1992, Ms. Pfeifer has been recognized for her exceptional contributions to children’s vision health. Serving in multiple roles, her impact has been felt through her expertise as a certified orthoptist and ophthalmic technologist, assessing children’s vision and strabismus, leading grant and proposal writing efforts, and coordinating electrophysiology services that have earned the UI a national reputation in ocular gene therapy and specialized care for children.

In addition, her commitment extends beyond her clinical roles as she actively engages in teaching orthoptic and medical students, residents, and pediatric ophthalmology fellows. Her dedication to education has positioned the University of Iowa as a leading institution for orthoptic training programs in the country. She played a pivotal role in establishing an electrophysiology suite that attracts patients nationwide, showcasing her innovative approach to enhancing pediatric eye care services. Working as a professional consultant with Ocular Electrophysiology Consulting, she has worked nationally and internationally to help others enhance electrophysiology testing in children. 

With a strong academic background, including a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology from Acadia University and a Master of Medical Education from the University of Iowa, Ms. Pfeifer’s commitment to excellence is further exemplified through her multiple board certifications and numerous prestigious awards.

Dedicated to clinical excellence, the doctor holds multiple board certifications, including the Canadian Orthoptic Council OC(C), the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology as a Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT), and the American Orthoptic Council® as a CO®.

Ms. Pfeifer’s research interests and ongoing projects highlight her dedication to advancing the field of pediatric ophthalmology and ocular electrophysiology. With a focus on areas such as Dark Adaptation in Inherited Retinal Disease, Vision Screening in the Community, and Electrophysiology in Inherited Retinal Disorders, she continues to drive innovation and improve outcomes for children with visual impairments.

Her accolades include recognition from the American Association of Certified Orthoptists, the Iowa Lions Foundation, CNN, and the International Orthoptic Association. Her passion for enhancing eye health in children has positively impacted countless lives, making her a deserving recipient of the AACO Lancaster Award in 2022.
