Get to know Rheumatologist Dr. Wen Xiong, who serves patients in Union, New Jersey.

Dr. Xiong is a board-certified rheumatologist who, in addition to her role as Director of the Division of Rheumatology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, serves patients at her private practice Humane Center for Arthritis and Rheumatism in Union, New Jersey.

The Humane Center for Arthritis and Rheumatism diagnoses, treats, and medically manages patients with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. These health problems affect the joints, muscles, bones, and sometimes other internal organs such as the kidneys, lungs, blood vessels, and brain. The goal of the practice is to help patients suffering from rheumatic disease achieve the best possible quality of life. 

Pertaining to her educational background, Dr. Xiong earned her medical degree from West China University of Medical Sciences in 1994. After relocating to the United States, she continued her medical career as a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia University in New York City, New York. After earning her Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy at New York Medical College, she went on to complete her residency in internal medicine at the same educational venue. This was followed by a fellowship in rheumatology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 

Before long, she became board-certified in both internal medicine and rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Throughout the doctor’s extensive and fruitful career, she has published more than ten journal articles and has presented eight posters and abstracts at professional conferences. Apart from being a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, she serves as President of the New Jersey Rheumatology Association.

Rheumatology is a branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and therapy of rheumatic diseases. Physicians who have undergone formal training in rheumatology are called rheumatologists. Rheumatologists treat arthritis, autoimmune diseases, pain disorders affecting joints, and osteoporosis. There are more than 200 types of these diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, lupus, back pain, osteoporosis, and tendinitis.

In addition to English, Dr. Xiong speaks Mandarin and Sichuanese.
