Dr. LeHew is an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) who is retired after a 40-plus-year career in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
Dr. LeHew received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1961. He then went on to complete his residency and internship with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Dr. LeHew was elected president of the medical staff at the Norfolk General and Leigh Memorial hospitals from 1982 to 1983. He also served on the EVMS Board of Visitors from 1992 to 1998, and was board chairman from 1996 to 1998. Furthermore, he was once president of the Norfolk Academy of Medicine and several other bodies.
Dr. LeHew is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The ABOG is a non-profit organization that board certifies obstetricians and gynecologists (OB-GYNS) and offers continuing certification to OB-GYNS in the United States and Canada. The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.
Dr. LeHew is a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG). To become a fellow, a candidate must become certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, an independent organization, and then nominated to the College by another fellow.
Dr. LeHew was born in Washington, D.C., and spent his first 10 years in Lewisburg, West Virginia, where his father was a family physician.
Dr. LeHew was awarded the Mason Andrews Community Service Award by Sentara Healthcare in 2007.
Obstetrics and gynecology is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology. OB-GYNs specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and disorders that affect women, such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, and menopause. Additionally, they work with expecting mothers throughout their pregnancies, during childbirth, and into postpartum.
Dr. LeHew is a Commision member of the Hospital Authority of Norfolk Board. Formed in 1988, the Hospital Authority of Norfolk Board is comprised of 11 community leaders appointed by the mayor of Norfolk. Each Commission member serves on a voluntary basis and receives no form of compensation for their hours of dedicated service.
When he is not attending board meetings, Dr. LeHew enjoys traveling, volunteering at Larchmont United Methodist Church, and spending time with the 14 grandchildren that he and his second wife share.
