An exceptional psychiatrist, Dr. Lawson is the Medical Director for the Medication Assisted Treatment Program in the Department of Health and Human Services Specialty Behavioral Health Services in Montgomery County, Maryland.

 

With a broad educational background, he received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Psychology from the University of New Hampshire and his medical degree from the Pritzker School of Medicine University of Chicago. He then went on to complete his residency in adult psychiatry at Stanford University, and completed a fellowship in psychopharmacology at the National Institute of Mental Health.

 

Recognized as a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (DLFAPA), the doctor attained board certification in psychiatry, psychopharmacology and addiction psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.

 

In addition to his clinical role, Dr. Lawson is also UT Austin’s institutional representative for the Health Disparities Education, Awareness, Research and Training (HDEART) Consortium. He was the director of Health Disparities Policy and Research Austin Travis County Integral Care where he helped to implement RAISE (Recovery After an Initial Psychotic Episode), a program that provides early intense interventions after an initial psychotic episode and a medication-assisted therapy program for opiate abusers in primary care.

 

The doctor has had a longstanding research and clinical interest in addressing racial and ethnic disparities in care, and has supported innovative treatments for the underserved, mentally ill and substance abusers. He has held numerous senior positions including Chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Howard University, president of the District of Columbia chapter of Mental Health America, President of the Washington Psychiatric Society, Chair of the Section of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences of the National Medical Association, President of the Black Psychiatrists of America, Chief of Psychiatry at the Roudebush Veterans Administration Hospital and Chief Medical Officer for the State of Tennessee Department of Mental Health.

 

Throughout his illustrious career, he has also held faculty positions at the University of Illinois, Urbana, University of California, Irvine, Vanderbilt University, University of Arkansas, and Howard University. He is a retired Emeritus Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Dell Medical School and former Director of Community Health Programs and Professor at Huston-Tillotson University, where he led the Sandra Joy Anderson Community Health and Wellness Center.

 

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.

 

As a testament to his success, Dr. Lawson has been the recipient of the American Psychiatric Foundation Award for Advancing Minority Mental Health, the Solomon Carter Fuller Award by the American Psychiatric Association, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Exemplary Psychiatrist Award and Outstanding Psychologist Award, the Jeanne Spurlock Award from the American Psychiatric Association, the E.Y. Williams Clinical Scholar of Distinction Award from the National Medical Association , and the George Winokur Clinical Research Award from the American Academy of Clinical Psychiatrists.
