Graduating with a B.A. in German and Comparative Literature from the University of Utah in 1964, followed by a medical degree in 1968, his journey is marked by a commitment to excellence in medicine and a passion for improving healthcare systems. He completed a rigorous residency in general, thoracic, and vascular surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, later serving as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Shadyside Hospital from 1978 to 1988.

His clinical practice as a general and vascular surgeon spanned 35 years, during which he developed a reputation for his surgical expertise and compassionate patient care.
