Pertaining to his educational background, Dr. Hartman graduated with his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1998. In addition to completing his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, he completed an additional year of fellowship training in upper extremity surgery at the University of California at San Diego in 2004.

A member of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons and the California Orthopedic Association, he is board-certified in surgery and surgery of the hand by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge. 

Committed to advancing the field of orthopedics, Dr. Hartman has been an instructor at the internationally renowned San Diego Shoulder meeting for the past four years. He frequently travels nationally to collaborate and train other orthopedic surgeons in operative techniques, particularly shoulder replacement surgery. He also remains affiliated with Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas and Tri-City Medical Center.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Nelson Award for Academic Excellence, June 2003; Best Resident Research Award, South Carolina Orthopedic Association meeting, August 2001; Medical University of South Carolina Intramural Research Grant for New Plate Design, June 2001; Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, 1997; Alpha Omega Alpha-Secretary. MUSC, 1997-1998; Honors Junior Surgery, Pediatrics, and Medicine Core rotations; Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honor Society, 1993-1994; Undergraduate NASA Space Grant Award for Battery Research, 1993-1994; and South Carolina Summer Research Grant, 1993-1994, among others.

A love of science and the complexity of the human form drew Dr. Hartman to the field of medicine, however he finds that patient care is the most rewarding aspect of his practice. When not in the office or operating room, he enjoys spending time with his family, surfing, and traveling.
