Furthering his education and training, Dr. Muñoz performed his residency in pediatrics at Driscoll Foundation Children’s Hospital in 1989. He then completed various fellowships, including a fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 1990, a fellowship in neurology at the University of Rochester in 1991, and a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Albert Einstein Medical Center in 1994.

During his tenure as the Director of Neonatology at Memorial Hermann Northeast, Dr. Muñoz served on several committees and held esteemed positions such as Chairman of OB/GYN at Northeast Medical Center Hospital from 1996 to 1997, Chairman of the Bioethics Committee at Northeast Medical Center Hospital from 1996 to 2000, and Chief of Staff at Northeast Medical Center Hospital from 2000 to 2001. He was recognized for his exceptional contributions and was awarded the titles of Chief of Staff and Physician of the Year in 2007. 

Board certified in neonatal-perinatal medicine and pediatrics, Dr. Muñoz is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Muñoz is an active member of the Harris County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Texas Pediatrics Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Child Neurology Society. 

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially ill or premature newborns. It is a hospital-based specialty and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units. Neonatologists generally diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects, as well as coordinating care and medically managing newborns born prematurely, critically ill, or in need of surgery.

Acknowledged for his expertise in the medical community, Dr. Muñoz has authored numerous articles in The Journal of Pediatrics. He has also been featured in over 100 articles in local, business, and medical newspapers, attributing his success to his dedication, persistence, and his supportive wife. 

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Lake Houston Community, Dr. Muñoz was honored as the 2017 honoree for the “Pink” Breast Cancer Awareness by the Northeast Foundation. Additionally, Memorial Hermann NE named their NICU the “Angel Muñoz, MD, MPH” Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in May 2017, as a tribute to his dedicated service spanning 25 years.

On a more personal note, Dr. Muñoz’ favorite place to vacation is in Italy and one of his hobbies include boxing. He is fluent in Spanish, English, and Italian, allowing him to effectively communicate with a diverse range of patients.
