Since 1998, Dr. Mandell has been on the clinical faculty of Eastern Virginia Medical School’s Department of Ophthalmology and has helped treat retinal disease in premature infants at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter. His diverse clinical interests include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, retinal detachments, pediatric retinal diseases, macular holes, macular puckers, and ocular trauma.
Passionate about his profession, the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, whose mission is to serve the public by improving the quality of ophthalmic practice through a process of certification and Maintenance of Certification that fosters excellence and encourages continual learning.
A 1987 graduate of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, Dr. Mandell went on to complete his residency in ophthalmology at the Emory University School of Medicine in 1988, where he served as Chief Resident. Following completion of his vitreoretinal fellowship at the same educational venue, he joined the Retina Consultants of St. Louis (Barnes Retina Institute) where he was on the clinical faculty of Washington University from 1993-1998. During that period, he served as the Director of Retina Fellowship training.
A native Virginian, he returned to the Tidewater area in 1998 and ultimately founded the Mandell Retina Center in 2007. To date, he remains a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
