Get to know Dermatologist Dr. Martin C. Mihm, Jr., who serves patients in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Mihm Jr. is a world-renowned international consultant for melanoma and skin tumors, including lymphoma, pigmented lesions, and cutaneous inflammatory diseases. He is the Director of The Mihm Cutaneous Pathology Consultative Service, which is a second opinion dermatopathology service affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

The services that he offers include: second opinion consultation, clinical and treatment advice, and recommendations.

In his current capacity, he also serves as: Director of the Melanoma Program within the Department of Dermatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital; Associate Director of the Center for Melanoma Oncology at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center; Co-Director of the Melanoma Risk and Prevention Clinic at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center; and Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School.

Regarding his educational background, Dr. Mihm Jr. started his medical career by earning his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He then went on to complete multiple residencies at top educational venues such as The Mount Sinai Hospital, Montefiore Hospital, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and Massachusetts General Hospital. He also completed a fellowship in pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1972.

Bringing over 30 years of expertise to his field, he is triple board-certified in dermatology, anatomic pathology, and dermatopathology. He is also a Fellow of the American Cancer Society as well as a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American College of Physicians.

While excelling, as an academician and clinician, Dr. Mihm Jr. has built a busy consultation service. To date, he has consulted on more than 350.000 cases, nationally and worldwide, and continues to offer accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment recommendations on routine and challenging cases in dermatology/dermatopathology. 

He began his melanoma studies with Dr. Wallace Clark in 1965 and co-authored the first publication of the classification of malignant melanoma into subtypes. He also contributed to establishing the importance of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes as an important prognostic factor in primary and metastatic melanoma. Through collaborations with other prominent researchers, his efforts led to the discovery of the role of basophils in human hypersensitivity reactions, and to the first description of the role of the vasculature in human allograft rejection. He also participated in the study of vaccine reactions to autologous melanoma cells and contributed to the description of various factors affecting the host reaction and their relationship to survival. Other notable contributions include the study of vascular anomalies, where the discovery of a specific phenotype in infantile hemangiomas has led to extensive studies on pathogenesis of these lesions.

Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin, the largest organ of the body; a specialty with medical, surgical and cosmetic aspects. A dermatologist is a specialist doctor who manages skin diseases due to both internal and external causes and is trained to address cosmetic concerns involving the skin. Dermatological duties include diagnosis and management of a variety of skin disorders, rashes, birthmarks, skin cancer screening and treatment, skin infections, cutaneous surgery and the use of injectables and lasers for skin rejuvenation.  

Throughout his career, Dr. Mihm Jr. balanced teaching, research, and excellent clinical service in the field of dermatopathology. He has written over four hundred articles and authored and co-authored twelve books.

Outside of practicing medicine, he enjoys listening to classical music. His favorite professional publication is The New England Journal of Medicine.
