Roumen N. Nikolov, MD, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with Albert J. Solnit Children’s Center – South Campus and with Yale School of Medicine

Get to know Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Roumen N. Nikolov, who serves patients in Middletown and New Haven, Connecticut. 

Licensed to practice medicine in Connecticut and New York, Dr. Nikolov is a top child and adolescent psychiatrist who is well versed in dealing with children and adolescents across the diagnostic spectrum. He serves as the Medical Director and Chief of Psychiatry for Albert J. Solnit Children’s Center – South Campus, which is Connecticut’s state facility for youth in need of psychiatric care and treatment. He joined the staff of the Solnit Center in January of 2016.

In practice since 2000, he also serves as the Associate Training Director of the Child Study Center at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. 

Committed to his profession, Dr. Nikolov is board-certified in psychiatry as well as child and adolescent psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, which is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high-quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists. He is also a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. 

In regards to the doctor’s educational background, he earned his medical degree from the Medical University of Varna in Bulgaria. He trained in psychiatry at Saint Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center/New York Medical College in New York City from 1995-1998, and in adolescent psychiatry at Solnit (at the time Riverview Hospital for Children and Youth) from 1998-2000. 

For the past 15 years, Dr. Nikolov has taught and supervised CAP fellows, psychiatry residents, and medical students as a clinical faculty member of the Yale Child Study Center, SUNY Downstate College of Medicine, NYU Child Study Center, and St. George University in Grenada. His clinical and research interests include psychiatric postgraduate training and supervision, LEAN performance improvement methods in behavioral health, administrative psychiatry, autism and disruptive behavior, and evidence-supported practices in public psychiatry.

Child and adolescent psychiatry, also known as pediatric psychiatry, is a branch of psychiatry that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders in children, adolescents, and their families. A child and adolescent psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of thinking, feeling, as well as behavior affecting children, adolescents, and their families.

Recognized as an expert in his field, Dr. Nikolov is the recipient of many awards and honors, including: Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2014), On-Time Doctor Award (2014), and Patients’ Choice Award (2014).
