For more than a decade, Dr. Naima Gila Zilkha has provided exceptional ophthalmic care to the Garden City community, working alongside Dr. Mark Fleckner in a compassionate and trusted clinical setting. Dr. Zilkha’s impressive academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Duke University in 1989, and a medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in 1993. She completed her ophthalmology residency at NYU – Bellevue Medical Center and further specialized in medical retina through a fellowship at NYU Medical Center. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and holds diplomate status with the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Living with Type I diabetes herself, Dr. Zilkha offers a profound empathy for patients managing the condition. “Ophthalmology is incredibly rewarding because I can connect with my patients on a personal level,” she shares. “Living with Type I diabetes myself has given me a deeper insight into the challenges my patients face, and I am committed to helping them navigate the effects of diabetes on their vision and everyday lives.”
She specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of macular degeneration, as well as other complex retinal conditions. Dr Zilkha’s care is tailored to each patient’s unique condition, offering individualized treatment plans that incorporate the latest advances in ophthalmic care.
Her dedication to the diabetes community has been recognized beyond the clinic. Dr. Zilkha was featured on the cover of Diabetes Positive! magazine and serves as a Research Partner with the American Diabetes Association, actively supporting research efforts to combat this condition. She has also been recognized for consecutive years by the Consumer Research Council of America as one of America’s Top Ophthalmologists in the field of medical retina. Dr. Zilkha is also a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), reflecting her commitment to excellence in retinal care.
