The doctor obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester and his medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. His postgraduate training in neurology and movement disorders took place at the University of Rochester Medical Center. 

From 1984 until 2009, he was on the faculty of the Department of Neurology at the University of Rochester, serving as Professor and Chief of the Movement Disorders and Cognitive and Behavioral Disorders units. Thereafter, he served as Director of the Movement Disorders Program at the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute in Summit, New Jersey.

Recognized internationally for his clinical skills and research in neurological, cognitive/behavioral, and movement disorders, Dr. Kurlan led an NIH-funded multicenter trial of the Alzheimer’s Disease Cooperative Study Group. He was a founding member of the Parkinson Study Group and leader of the Tourette Syndrome Study Group, two collaborative international research groups that conduct large-scale investigations.

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurologists are licensed medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles of patients. They examine a patient’s mental and physical status, conduct medical tests and scans, and evaluate the results to diagnose and treat the patient.
