Dr. Cooper graduated with honors and earned his medical degree from the State University Of New York Downstate Medical Center in 1961, giving him over five decades of experience in his field. After obtaining his medical degree he completed his internal medicine and cardiology residency with the Baltimore City Hospital and the Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center. Wanting to further his training he then completed his internal medicine fellowship with the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, followed by his cardiology fellowship with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Dr. Cooper is dual certified in internal medicine and Cardiovascular Disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. To stay up to date in his field he remains a professional member of the American College of Physicians and has been inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Cooper currently practices as a Cardiovascular Disease Specialist with the Westchester Heart Specialists and is affiliated with Montefiore New Rochelle and the Montefiore Medical Center. He is also an Associate Professor with the Department of Medicine (Cardiology) with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Cardiology is a branch of internal medicine. A cardiologist is not the same as a cardiac surgeon. A cardiac surgeon opens the chest and performs heart surgery, whereas a cardiologist specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the cardiovascular system.
