Zerrin Yetkin, MD, a Neuroradiologist with UT Southwestern Medical Center

Get to know Neuroradiologist Dr. Zerrin Yetkin, who serves patients in Dallas, Texas.

One of the pioneers of modern neuroradiology imaging technology, Dr. Yetkin joined UT Southwestern Medical Center in 2000 and established the system for fMRI, MRI perfusion, MRI spectroscopy, and other high-end imaging and radiology techniques for the Department of Radiology.

In her work, she focuses primarily on diagnostic imaging. She maps brain function, connections within the brain, and is able to identify tumors, infarctions, signs of epilepsy, and other neurological conditions. To do this, she works closely with patients, walking them through the imaging process and making sure they feel comfortable every step of the way.

The doctor’s services are used by a wide variety of specialties, from neurology and neurosurgery to emergency medicine and orthopedic surgery. She also receives referrals from outside institutions and, occasionally, from nearby states.

Before embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Yetkin earned her medical degree at Aegean University Medical School in Turkey, where she completed a residency in radiology and worked as a faculty physician. She later completed a fellowship in neuroradiology  at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

An authority in her field, she is board-certified in neuroradiology and diagnostic radiology by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The mission of the ABR is to serve patients, the public, and the medical profession by certifying that its diplomats have acquired, demonstrated, and maintained a requisite standard of knowledge, skill, and understanding essential to the safe and competent practice of diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.

On a professional level, Dr. Yetkin is an active member of the American Society of Neuroradiology, the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the Organization for Human Brain Mapping, the Radiological Society of North America, and the Society for Neuroscience.

Before joining UT Southwestern Medical Center, she was part of the team at Medical College of Wisconsin that first developed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and resting-state fMRI. These two high-end imaging techniques revolutionized the field of neuroradiology. The article they published on the concept and imaging technique of resting state fMRI has been fourth among the 100 most-cited articles in neuroimaging.

Active in academia, Dr. Yetkin serves as an Associate Professor of Radiology at the UT Southwestern Medical Center.

During her career, Dr. Yetkin has published extensively on the development of and best practices for functional MRI, resting-state fMRI, and neuroradiology. Her current research centers on the application of resting-state fMRI to clinical practice and using fMRI to measure memory dominance.

Radiology refers to the field of medicine that uses non-invasive imaging scans to diagnose a patient. A radiologist is a physician who uses imaging methodologies to diagnose and manage patients and provide therapeutic options.
