Kylie Bourland, RN, a Registered Nurse & Clinical Nurse Leader with Canyon Vista Medical Center

Get to know Registered Nurse & Clinical Nurse Leader, Kylie Bourland, who serves patients in Sierra Vista, Arizona.

Kylie is a registered nurse who serves as a clinical nurse leader in the Department of Women & Children’s Services (WCS) at Canyon Vista Medical Center in Sierra Vista, Arizona.

The WCS team is dedicated to caring for women through each stage of pregnancy, labor and delivery, ensuring the women and babies are healthy. However, not every pregnancy story goes as planned. From ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages to preterm labor and premature delivery, the list of possible complications is long. This is why the team of nurses at Canyon Vista Medical Center are trained to support families if a patient encounters a serious pregnancy or birth experience that leads to the loss of a child at any stage, prenatal to postpartum.

“I try to follow through with the staff and ensure they are coping well. Staff have a hard time and struggle in these unfortunate cases. I provide a shoulder to cry on and try to be as supportive as I can for the staff, as well as the family. When these situations occur, I try to take the brunt of the work to shield them the best I can. I’ve taken calls in the middle of the night and come in to assist in the ER. Whatever needs to be done, I try my best to help.” as stated by Kylie, who has been with Canyon Vista Medical Center since 2013.

She was vital to the fundraising efforts in order to obtain a Cuddle Cot at the hospital. A Cuddle Cot is a refrigerated cradle that keeps the baby cool, slowing down the natural process of death, and thereby allowing families to spend more time with their baby. While no individual or facility hopes to need a Cuddle Cot, it is a service that is extremely precious to parents that are experiencing a loss. Kylie explains, “How do you say goodbye unless you first get to say hello. There has never been a parent who regrets seeing their child; they always regret not seeing them. You can’t ever have enough time with your baby. You never want to say the final goodbye.”

After earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, Kylie went on to obtain her Master of Science in Nursing degree from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri.

Having attended extensive training in several states to help educate her staff in the care of patients experiencing a loss, she is making a huge difference in the community and working towards a cultural shift in the conversation of prenatal and postpartum child loss. “I feel like this is a calling I’ve been given. It’s my ministry and I do it with love and I do it with passion. I will do it with every ounce I have in me to take care of someon.e” said Kylie.

In order to stay up to date in her field, she remains a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, which is the second-largest nursing organization in the world with approximately 135,000 active members.

A registered nurse (RN) is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. RNs fulfill a variety of job duties. In addition to their primary role in treating and caring for patients, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other RN job functions include leadership, research, performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, and assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up.

A clinical nurse leader (CNL) is a relatively new nursing role that was developed in the United States to prepare highly skilled nurses focused on the improvement of quality and safety outcomes for patients or patient populations. CNLs are responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating client care by coordinating, delegating, and supervising the care provided by a healthcare team at the clinical level, as opposed to the administrative level.
